Whistle While You Work

Whistle While You Work is based on one of my mother’s stories when she first arrived at Auschwitz extermination camp as a nineteen year old prisoner. In this piece I try to convey the unimaginable impracticality and inconceivable absurdity of these sort of events at Auschwitz. We dance to Mozart’s ‘March of the Gypsies’. This was one of the pieces the Jewish orchestra was forced to play at Auschwitz while accompanying the Jewish prisoners walking to their death.  The piece is reminiscent of the The Grimm brothers’ stories, who were a Nazi favourite. Their fables had an affinity to magical elements but at the same time exposed a horribly dark undertone.
